grateful that i haven't had vertigo in months grateful for this forum fell off my bike last tuesday and fractured my radius near the wrist too many fragments to set it; need surgery, feel scared but at least it's only an hour outpt. surgery feel stressed about the cost grateful for wonderful husband and friends, use of my left hand/ arm, good heart and lung health so i'll miss riding and thought it was improving my balance but i had a lot of fun riding my bicycle but this is my second fall where i've sustained fracture and surgery. looking forward to becoming a walker in june or july because i think it's safer for me. started gathering documents to begin disability application my best to all
Sorry to hear this. I am glad you have so many positives in your life. In the last few years i switched to a ‘peddle forward’ type bike (electra townie) and it works for me since my issue was hopping on and off which i do often when i meet oncoming in narrow spaces. My next step is a three wheeler which i see a lot of in my older bike-friendly community. There are some very well made ones. But everyone will tell you walking is a better weight-bearing exercise and the ultimate balance exercise. Good luck with the surgery. Onward!
June, thanks for the feedback. i'm not freaking out today, thank God. i am thinking about an adult tricycle but as you say walking would benefit me greatly and i can start any time, not sure what i was thinking yesterday. my best to everyone
I understand completely, Marie. Biking is still my most fun thing to do as i grow older although i cannot do it in the way i used to. I only have one balance nerve now and add to that age and adjustments are required. Do keep moving one way or the other.
thanks for you r support Clare and June today i'll see another surgeon because i'm not going to spend about $ 1300. i can't work and need to save. so maybe i'll have a cast, see how it heals and live with the resulting function. sometimes i mourn the loss of what was but i know that i have a lot to be thankful for. my best to everyone
Unfortunately, crashing is part of the sport of cycling. Recreational and competitive riders crash all the time. Please don't feel bad because people with perfect balance and absolutely no "DIZZY" issues go down all the time for silly reasons. I have hit the deck more times than I wish to remember going slow and going fast. I had a bad crash about 1.5 years ago. I had surgery to reconstruct my shoulder. The surgery went well and I had no reactions to the meds from the surgery that affected my Menieres. BUT BUT BUT I was given the wrong brace and after a week the brace created a blockage and consequently a blood clot. Things got really bad after I was put on blood thinner meds. My ears could NOT handle the fast flow of blood or whatever else this blood thinners were doing to my body composition. SO DO NOT let them give you blood thinners and be very very very careful about the brace or cast you will get after the surgery. I recently had another minor surgery and I experienced no problems at all with my Meniere's or bad reactions to the surgery meds. Best of luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thanks Karina i'm pretty sure i'm going to enjoy walking Pupper, each time i got dizzy after turning my head not going to have surgery i have a Y splint my best to everyone
Some cyclists have more incidents than others. We can only speculate as to why that might be the case….
Just reading this i had two thoughts. One, for those of us with impaired balance, we balance a lot with our eyes. Turning the head does a number on that. Post surgery (when i lost one balance nerve) it took me years to be able to look back over one shoulder while riding a bike and for that reason i always and only rode bike trails, no roads at all. And a mirror is a good thing too. But then there is the possibility that turning the head is causing the dizziness which brings to mine bppv or cervical vertigo (2 different things). I just bring this up because we are constantly faced with the combined challenge of staying safe and at the same time staying active and happy. The more we tune in to the triggers and causes, the less we have to needlessly limit the good stuff. Hope you are doing ok with the injury. Take care but keep planning fun stuff.
There's always people that have more accidents not just in cycling but in every walk of life. But as I said, crashing is part of the sport. Have you ever watch a professional bike race? In the Tour De France, Pro riders crash every single day. These are people that could probably ride blind folded and they go down all the time. It sucks but it happens. The last terrible accident that I had was caused by another rider than hit something on the road and took me out at 26 mph. My point was that if it happens to the pros it can happened to anyone.
had wrist surg 2day i told the nurse on the phone yesterday that i was going to take my acyclovir in the morning with a few sips of water to avoid vertigo good news, no problem, no vomiting all went well typing with left hand and appreciate this hand who knew that if your doctor makes some calls [he (in my case)] can get the cost down from 12700.00 to 5800.00 i'm thankful i had such a compassionate dr i'm happy to report that even tho i woke up with that full and icky feeling in my head this morn i didn't have it when i woke up from general anesthesia, still had the headache which 2 excedrine fixed each time that i have woken up from propofol i have felt agitated, wired and so negative that i miss the beauty around me, i've been drinking lots of water, took my nightly high potency multi vitamin/ multimimeral and hope to wake up tomorrow and count my blessings. my well wishes and healing energy going out to all
There is a world of difference between a weekend warrior on lightweight carbon riding in a peleton, and a retired lady on a steel framed shopper. They are both cyclists. My point is that crashing is not an integral part of cycling. As an advocate of the noble art, I am concerned that your message hardly helps to encourage participation.
Good luck with your recovery, Marie. You'll soon be ambidextrous and ready to take on the world with whichever side you choose to use. Wishing you the power of mother nature in your healing.
thanks Clare, and sorry that you're eligible for this forum. on an upside I have received a ton of wisdom and support here.
I cant see Marie’s last post to this thread except when i go to her profile and look at the last post. Not sure if i did something wrong or there is a glitch.
Thanks Clare especially for that extremely positive part about taking on the world as i get depressed and Sunday's episode was a X o the richter scale. Thankful that has passed and that I have this forum for support.
Sorry but I still support the fact that crashing is part of the beautiful sport of cycling. Anyone that gets on a bike is cycling. Racers crash, kids going to school crash, touring folks crash, cops on bikes crash, folks riding slowly in their neighborhood crash, etc. I'm not discouraging participation but i'm being realistic. K
