Hi all, and thanks for being here. Sorry in advance for the long post - just want to get all the essential facts out there. For the last coupe of years i have been doing some stumbling/tripping & falling which happens out of the blue. I have also had these occasional moments where all of a sudden i feel a bit dizzy/the room spinning. The dizzy/spinning feeling would only last a moment or two. It has happened when I have been standing, walking or just sitting & watching TV. Nothing particular seems to be the precursor of the spinning/dizzy feeling. The spinning/dizzy feeling comes and goes. My previous doctor and I figured the stumbling/tripping was as a result of my diabetic peripheral neuropathy in my feet/toes, and the dizziness was as a result of my high blood pressure. In the last 12 months I have taken 3 pretty hard falls, including breaking an arm. As I think about my falling, the weird part is that it seems my head gets heavy and i tend to lean/tilt and then fall. Starting last August, I had a 3 day long episode of vertigo with nausea and vomiting. It wasn't 3 straight days, rather one moment I'm fine and then next moment the room is spinning, even though I wasn't moving, just sitting in a chair. I also get a ringing/hissing sound and fullness on my left ear. My wife and son helped me to my bed and I would lay down. After getting stomach sick, I took some meclizine and went to sleep. Then I was OK later that night. The next day I was OK when I got up, but a few hours later the spinning feeling came back. Got sick, took the meclizine and laid down. A few hours later, I am OK again. and be mostly OK the next day. Same thing happened on day 3. I'm thinking I must have an ear infection. So on day 4 since I was feeling better, I went to my doc. The doc checked my ears/throat and they said there was no signs of an ear infection and things looked normal. A few months later, same thing happened but only for a day. It happened a 3rd, 4th and 5th time but I take the meclizine at the first sign of the hissing sound and/or pressure (like when ears get plugged in an airliner). I've gone to an urgent care after the 5th time and the doc said there was no sign of an ear infection. Finally my primary doc said she thinks i might have meniere's disease and prescribed Triam/HCTZ 37.5. (I still take the meclizine when needed). My doc said she wants to order an MRI of my inner left ear (I had a brain MRI over a year ago. Anyway, after being on that for about a month I do feel a little better, at least I don't have the nausea as much. However, my head does still seem to be heavy and i feel like I am tilting sometimes. And I noticed that my hearing in my left ear is much less than my right ear. (example: when I put the phone to my right ear I hear fine, but when i put the phone up to my left ear the person on the other end sounds very far away). I am using a cane and have an appointment to see an ENT doctor in 3 weeks. I am wondering if the stumbling I have had for years is actually more related to meniere's disease instead of diabetic neuropathy. Can it take years to develop like this? Can it progress like this? One last fact to consider. I was diagnosed as stone def as an infant - couldn't hear a thing at 9 months. My mother took me to several specialist, most of whom said to enroll in schools for the deaf. But one doctor took me off all calcium products and did something the bones around my ear(s). I don't exactly know what was done, and my mom wasn't too clear about it either, but since I can hear now, at least in my right ear, I am thankful. Well, again I am sorry for the long post but I wanted to give you all the info I have. Hopefully there are some here who can offer advice and suggestions.
Wow what a story, I'm no authority but a lot of what you describe is typical Menieres' fullness in ears, hissing, upset stomach are all typical of an attack for me. The falling could be drop attacks which I have been spared and I've been battling for about 4 years now. When i have an attack its sudden no tip off's everything comes at once so I immediately take a 1g tablet of Lorezpam (Valium) which settles everything in my head along with a Meclizine which settles my stomach. I've been on Antivirals for 16 mos which had pretty much returned me to normal life until a recent relapse which I'm currently working through. I would suggest finding a good Neurologist to go along with your ENT sounds like you need both. Lean on those on this Forum, I did and it has given me both symptomatic and emotional support there is a wealth of knowledge here. Good luck
Jim I'll reed that soon when I'm feeling better. Man, when people don't break their wall-of-text into smaller paragraphs it feels like a daunting task to reed. Hey you guys, I'm changing the spelling of "read" to "reed" when in present tense. This is kinda why Led Zeppelin didn't spell "Lead" right, because Americans would think it was pronounced Leeed Zeppelin. Like the first blimp in a line of blimps, instead of a heavy metal blimp.
