    Hello,

I'm a newbie with a question. In November I had sudden onset low frequency hearing loss in my right ear accompanied with aural fullness, loud tinnitus, and balance issues (vertigo and falling). I had a VNG done last Friday and the results indicated my left ear was 46% weaker than my right with a suggested diagnosis of left sided peripheral weakness. I'm confused...I thought my left ear was my "good" ear. I'm wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience?

    Thanks!

That’s confusing! Are they sure there’s no technician error? What was the doctor’s take on that?

I had almost the same experience. Went in for a hearing test after noticing that my hearing had diminished significantly. All tests showed my right ear had "substantial" hearing loss; while left was "moderate". Fast forward about 3 months & Vertigo episodes started w/o warning - went back in to ENT & was sent to a local Meniere's specialist at Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). Was diagnosed w/left ear Meniere's.

Left ear has continued to deteriorate & I've had three separate rounds of steroid shots in that year. I get almost a full year relief from those shots, though I'm suddenly experiencing new bouts of dizziness on an increased frequency over the last week.

Hope your experience is manageble & you get relief!

Thank you so much for the responses.

Anne: it is confusing! I don’t think there was a technician error. The way the test felt was markedly different on both sides. My appt to see my doctor isn’t for a couple weeks so I’ll have to wait to hear what his thoughts are.

Gtginchy: Do you still have symptoms on the right side too? Do you think your Menieres is bilateral? My hearing has been perfect on my left side. It seems weird that the vestibular function is damaged but hearings okay. Conversely, I’m shocked my right ear which had significant hearing loss has better vestibular function.

My symptoms are all on my left side so I was surprised that my vemps were a bit worse on my right. However the calorics testing was definitely left sided abnormality. I wasn’t given an explanation about what the heck it means but I plan on asking at my next appointment:)
