In my "problem ear" I get a lot of pain like an ear infection pain but no infection.

I never experienced any pain with Menerie's, only fullness.

If you have an infection in the inner ear how would the doctor see that?

I will have a dull pain that accompanies the fullness from time to time - not always. Sort of like a headache, localized to the center of my affected ear.

I had pain in one ear in the beginning and could not believe it when doctors told me there was no infection. Over time it faded and only the other symptoms persisted.

Sometimes the pain is not really in or from your ear but the muscles around the area i.e. in your upper neck where it joins the skull (suboccipital region). The SCM attaches itself to the mastoid process, which is right behind the ears in the bony part, and if there is much tightness, it can feel as though the pain is coming from inside your ear.

May not be your case but something worth checking into all the same.

Would similar mechanics induce headache, or perhaps migraine to those susceptible, when hair is tied back too tightly?

Yes, I would imagine so. The suboccipital area is a very sensitive one so think of the hair being pulled back tightly right above it. Your keeping the entire scalp area taut and pulled.

The best way to test this would be to exert pressure right under the base of your skull from behind your ears to the neck vertebrae, without pressing on the vertebrae. If you feel pain and/or a sense of momentary imbalance, you know that region is being irritated by a ponytail.

I get neck/ear/jaw pain on my right (affected) side. It seems to be mostly during barometric pressure changes, maybe slouchy posture. It’s tender over my masseter muscle, sternocleidomastoid and up the back of my neck and head. It feels like a toothache but none of my teeth are tender. My left side muscles are tight too but not sore.

I just developed Meniere's this August. Some episodes cause my affected ear to have such extensive pain (from fluid pressing) it feels as though it's the outer ear. The pain is almost unbearable! Then, in a day or two when it's over, the pain disappears.

I, too, get the ear pain and pressure everyone talks about. I discussed it with my ENT/OTO and he said "Yep, Meniere's folks get that with the barometer changes. It happens, we just don't know why." Confidence inducing. And he's one of the most highly recommended in Indiana. But he has done a good job with my care. I'm not knocking him. There're just too many flavors of Meniere's and not enough research.
The whole ear pain thing makes you want to rethink the VanGogh story. I'm convinced he had Meniere's and just got sick of his affected ear. Not as glamorous, but probably closer to the truth.
