Hi there, new poster here. I visited Dr. Gacek at the beginning of April, and he prescribed his usual regimen for me -- valacyclovir 1g 3x/day for 3 weeks, then 2x for 2 weeks, then 1x maintenance dose. It's now been three months, and I never went down to the maintenance dose since I haven't seen any improvement (things have generally gotten worse, unfortunately).

I contacted Dr. Gacek and he said we should switch to famciclovir (generic), which he prescribed to me in 500mg pills. He didn't give me any further info, but the prescription says 3x a day so I'm assuming it's the same regimen as valacyclovir. This time, I'm more inclined to stay on a higher dosage for longer to see if there's any improvement. I'm told Dr. Gacek is retiring this month and is only in the office 3 half-days a week, so it's difficult to get in contact with him for advice.

I'm wondering if anyone else has used both/either of the drugs and could advise on what worked best for them? Any antiviral success stories that were worse before better? Thanks. - Sean

I think you should contact his office about the dosage. I only took that dose for a week if i remember correctly but it has been a long time. Dont guess.
