Has anyone had to quit taking Dyazide?

My Potassium level has dropped from 4.5 to 3.1 since I've been taking it. Once you get into the mid 2's, you have to start worrying about your heart.
My Crohn's Doctor has ordered me to stop taking it, but I take it for my hearing and I'm worried I'm going to lose most of it now. Today is the first day I haven't taken it in 3 years.
Anyone else have to quit taking it? And how did your hearing react once you were off it?

I quit taking maxide because my sodium got too low. But it never really helped my ears anyway. Have you talked to the ent about alternative diuretics that might spare the potassium better for you?

    Spironolactone might be an alternative.

Are you not taking a potassium supplement? I believe, generally, when one is taking dyazide regular lab work to check the potassium level is a necessity. Quite often, a potassium supplement is prescribed to keep the potassium at an accepted level.

I was just prescribed Amiloride HCL 5 mg in place of Dyazide by my ENT two days ago. He said that is what he prescribes if a person can not taken Dyazide.

I had taken Dyazide for 4 years up until this June. It seemed it was beginning to have an adverse effect on my kidneys, but even worse the sodium depletion I believe helped set off MAV, which I still am having chronic attacks.

My ENT felt even if I am having chronic MAV attacks I should take the Amiloride, if not taking Dyazide.

I have not started taking the Amiloride yet, I was going to post to ask if anyone had taken it. I seem to be super sensitive to drugs in general. Also it usually takes me a month to over-research all these meds I have been prescribed and then just bite the bullet and take.

So just giving the lengthy reply so you know my ENT thought it was good, but I have not decided to take or not. Best to you. Bonnie

I stopped going to my ENT because I got very frustrated. Nothing worked. I had around 10 steroid injections, endolymphatic sac surgery and took tons of oral steroids and it really didn't change anything.
He is a specialist and I had to drive an hour each way every time to see him.
So I don't have an ENT anymore. My General practitioner continued the diuretic for me.
I've taken it every day for a few years and really don't think it was helping me.
If my hearing goes completely bad, I can always ask my Doctor for a different diuretic that doesn't deplete your potassium. My heart is more important than my hearing I guess.

    Thanks for the replies!

What have you tried other than diuretics? They help some but definately
    not all people.

I try low sdium but it's hard living down here in new orleans.
Other than that, I've only had the injections and surgery and nothing worked. In fact, I think it got worse after the endolymphtic sac surgery.
Since nothing worked, I quit going to the ent specialist and got 2 hearing aids.
They definitely help most days, but some days the distortion is so bad, they make it harder to comprehend.
This is my major issue. I can wake up and my hearing is pretty good, but by lunch I can barley understand people, but later in the day it gets better.
I'm afraid stopping the diuretic will make my hearing go in the gutter. Today is the second day without dyazide and it's ok so far. I hear a little higher rumble in one ear, but I can still comprehend.

\June, I know you're a big fan of the antivirals. That's one thing I haven't tried, and that's mostly becasue my specialist didn't believe they would help me.

My doc put me on a potassium supplement for the reason you cite. I have been stable for 6 months.

Dyazide didn't work for me, I think because of unpleasant side effects, but it was so long ago, I'm not sure. I was switched to spironolactone, a potassium-sparing diuretic, and told to eat a banana a day. I took it daily for some 15 years, until I had laby surgery. I tried reducing the dose from 50mg to 25mg and had vertigo flare-ups, so went back to 50mg. I think it was helpful in reducing my meniere's symptoms.

What is your daily schedule like? Are you in a different place in the morning than the afternoon? I am thinking about allergy. Allergies do not always have classic sneezing, runny nose and itchy eyes. Sometimes they go right for the ears.

Distortion and tinnitus were the things most helped by antivirals in me. Maybe your family dr will rx antivirals. That is where i first got mine prescribed. Ent’s tend to favor surgery because they are surgeons. ‘If the only tool you have is a hammer everything looks like a nail.’
