Hi Everyone, I came here searching for answers to my recently diagnosed problem. The story: One morning I quickly got up to turn the alarm off as I usually do but lost balance. When I quickly got up again, I felt light-headed. I want to the gym and laid own on a bench press, and the ceiling started spinning for 5 seconds. Generally, here are the symptoms: - I have Sometimes vertigo symptoms if I laid down on left side and look at 45 degree angle but not on right side. The spinning doesn't happen most of the time even on the left ears. - Feeling of fullness in the ears but no problem hearing and no strange sounds. - Initially both ears were clogged with discharge - Minor ear aches and itchy - minor headaches - Got nausea one time -Flu like symptoms - ears are sensitive to sounds - it hearts when I come close to some loud sharp sounds - Walk-in clinic Dr gave me antibiotics for ear infection for 10 days but I still have the symptoms after a month. - Saw my family doctor who said I have Meniere's disease and prescribed me SERC and also apo-beclometasone to treat flu-like symptoms. I have not taken these drugs yet because I am still confused about this problem. Based on this, what is the likely hood that I have Meniere's disease? Thank you in advance.
Welcome Tman! "Initially both ears were clogged with discharge" This is not a Menieres symptom. All the rest could be Menieres, or could be related to what is going on in your inner ear. Get yourself to an ENT to get your ears looked at and cleared up, then evaluate the remaining symptoms. If the ENT says Menieres, find yourself an Otoneurologist. In my personal experience, ENT's are limited in there knowledge of and treatment options for Menieres. Plenty of reading to do on this site, plenty of ideas.
Because the spells seem to be related to movement, it seems like it could be BPPV rather than Meniere's -- which would be good news. As ODAT above says, an ENT and/or neurotologist should be helpful.
Tman, did your doctor perform any tests or just diagnose you with Meniere's based on the description of your symptoms? There are various tests which should be done including an MRI to eliminate other possible causes of your symptoms. As Clare said though, it could be BPPV in which case any good ENT should be able to confirm this by having you perform certain maneuvers to induce it.
Hi Everyone, I am sorry I was offline for a few days. I really appreciated your help. Zotjen - when i described the symptoms, he looked at my ears using otoscope and said I have Menieres disease. My current symptoms are: - Dizziness when I move quickly - mostly when I get up - Intermittent spinning when i lay down on left side - Both ears are itchy and clocked. Unless I move or lay down on one side or lay down and look up I don't get dizzy or spinning. I have an appointment with my doctor on Jan 22 and will ask him to send me to ENT. On my first visit, the dr prescribed me SERC and SERC and also apo-beclometasone. But I didn't take them. Do you think I should take apo-beclometasone to clear my flu like symptoms? Sometimes it feels like allergy symptoms too.
Hi TMan, I hope you get to at least see an ENT. A neurotologist or otolaryngologist would be even better. Don't accept the diagnosis of Meniere's until you've seen the ENT and have had some testing done. Dizziness upon rising quickly and spinning when you lie down are classic signs of BPPV and are not typical symptoms of Meniere's. Your could have more than one thing going on. It could be that you are suffering from BPPV and the clogged ears could be caused by eustachian tube dysfunction. Meniere's can not be diagnosed in one visit to a doctor. As others have said, your symptoms are indicative of BPPV, and can be easily fixed. Just because the doctor looking into your ear and didn't see an infection or any other cause for your symptoms, doesn't mean you have Meniere's. Good luck in finding the right doctor that can help you.
