Does anyone experience fluctuating tinnitus? When my bad ear feels full or blocked, my tinnitus is almost undetectable, but when my ear clears, the tinnitus gets much stronger. I’m curious to know if others experience the same.

Pretty sure most on this site do. I've had tinnitus in every way possible. It just becomes that pain in the arse neighbor that is always annoying you.

But mine specifically correlates with the fullness in my ear. I would think when my ear is the fullness, the tinnitus would be the greatest, but it’s the opposite for me, or is that not unusual?

Djrugg - yes, I would say that it opposite. When my ear is full the tinnitus is worse. If my ear is clear, usually all symptoms are less.

I have 2 forms of Tinnitus - the high pitched that i have had my whole life and can ignore. When i get stressed and my ear fullness is worse i get a second form which is like a low woob woob in the effected ear. I have been tracking all my symptoms daily for a few months now and find that yoga, massage, chiro (atlas adjustments) and osteopathy have reduced the second lower tinnitus to almost nothing. The fullness can be triggered by parties or loud multiple source sounds. (No concerts in my future.) Also I can reduce the fullness with the above therapy and find that after sleeping my ears "drip" and are much more open in the morning. One theory is that the liquid is part of the ears way of cleaning waste but somehow due to some impingement it can't get out and after a while it bursts - some hearing damage is done when it bursts and the tinnitus expresses as the brains way of filling in the missing sound that it is expecting. Or so my ear specialist suggests.

I experience the same thing. Less, and sometimes no tinnitus when the ear feels blocked, and any tinnitus at that time tends to be a low-pitched, pulsing tinnitus. When the ear feels clear, the tinnitus tends to be high-pitched and non-pulsing,

Have you experienced any vertigo? I haven’t, and I don’t think I’ve had any attacks. My ear blocks, then it opens in varying degrees (sometimes mildly blocked, sometimes more open). I’m wondering if this is caused by something other than the inner ear problem.

So far, I have not had vertigo in 20+ years. I did have it before I had the shunt surgeries many years ago. In my case, I and my doctor are certain that it is the Meniere's and not another issue.

I went to my Oto last week and he said the fluctuating tinnitus is tied to hearing. According to him, when your hearing is not good the brain fills in the void with the added noise of tinnitus. How is your hearing when you have increased fullness?

Apparently, this isn't true for everyone. It isn't true for me. I know what I experience; no one is going to tell me otherwise.

CS, one thing about this guy is that he freely admits that he's winging it. He looks you straight in the eye and says, "after 20 years of working in this field, the only thing I can predict about Menieres is that it is unpredictable."

Good for him! I always appreciate a doctor who admits that s/he doesn't know everything.

Yes! I have this! Currently my fullness in increased and tinnitus is lower. I don't get it. I also have constant disequillibrium (the most unbearable symptom)

My hearing is impaired when I have increased fullness and my tinnitus is low. When my fullness decreases my tinnitus increases and my hearing is better.
