Hi- I’m Sheryl and just recently joined. I’ve been diagnosed since last year with Meniere’s. I’m deaf in right ear, have the tinnitus, and suffer from these violent attacks. I’ve always had greyhounds since I was a child, and my last one passed last year. I’m very interested in obtaining a service dog. I live in Florida, and I would appreciate any suggestions- thanks- I have no warning prior to my 6 hour attacks, and some cause me to be take. To the hospital.
vestibular.org has a list of resources regarding organizations that provide service dogs, how you can pay for a service dog(not all places provide free of charge) estimated cost per year of owning a service dog...you get the idea. As an aside, if anyone reading this happens to require a service dog due to USA military service related injuries(no clue about other countries), you can get a service dog, ALL COSTS COVERED. Injured service members just have to go talk to the VA.
I have been diagnosed with minieres disease now for 15 years and I am very interested in getting a service dog not so much for balance but just to alert me when a attack is coming on and would really like a basset hound, I've read that the large dogs have been trained in this area for balance but cant find any information about it for smaller dogs, do you know whether or not this is an option?
Hi I am newly diagnosed with menieres. A couple er visits including by ambulance. I get severe vertigo along with throwing up... I'm very interested in training my dog to alert me prior to an episode... Any suggestions? Being they are unpredictable and sporactic I don't know how I can teach her when they can be spread out.. Please advise, I'm extremely anxious since my last hospital trip.
H Jennifer, Welcome to the worst club ever! I’m so sorry you’re experiencing some of the worst this illness has to throw at you. I hope you become one of the many who find that their menieres has a short course, and just seems to go away. That happens for many people. In the meantime, I’m sure other members can offer you advice about what has helped remedy/mitigate their illness, or you can look up ideas in the database. Everyone has their own route to feeling better/coping. Whatever decisions you make regarding your treatment, you will only find support here. Regarding a service dog predicting vertigo...I can’t say that’s impossible, but I’m not sure that it is possible either. *My belief is that it is dependent on the exact cause of the vertigo, and we still don’t know what that is for Meniere’s. There are many educated theories, but until an exact, definitive cause is shown, how do you train a dog to detect vertigo? I believe you might be interested in a service dog for bracing/balance(not a mobility dog). The best breeds for service work are labs, retrievers, German Shepherds, and poodles. If you don’t know much about service dog training or certification you should know that in the US, requirements vary by state. There is NO federally recognized/required certification, though many places will be happy to sell you, “certification,” on the internet. A dog must pass the public access test, and generally the first step in the process is having the dog pass the, “Canine Good Citizen,” test. Hope you find this information helpful, and of course, do your own research. Just because I’m skeptical of vertigo detecting dogs doesn’t mean I’m right.
Do you know the steps I would need to take to get a service dog for myself having ménière’s? I have even been having these attacks very badly at work. My boss has witnessed them. I would also need a dog for hearing as the ménière’s has affected my hearing greatly.
Hi Sheryl, I'm very intersted, can you please advise on training for menieres alerts. I have a dog I'm attached to, and would love to train her. Please advise and thank you so much for this !
Hello heather and ghost I would be interested in your training guidance.. please advise me of your training options. I have a small dog that i think could help me out with your guidance. Please advise further, and thanks!
Hello Heather! I’ve also been recently diagnosed with Ménière’s and would love more information on service dog training. Thank you so much.
Off topic - but - I have a certified Therapy dog. Prior to covid I took him to schools, hospitals and senior centers. He doesn't alert me to anything but his hunger BUT he keeps me going, laughing and gives me a reason to live with this %#$@ disease.
I have a Doberman mix rescue that I’d love to have trained. Do you know if that’s possible? How would I go about that?
I'm glad I found this to know that I'm not crazy. About 10-15 minutes before I have an attack my dog starts to really pester me. At first I thought she was acting odd and wanted to pay, but I thought I noticed the pattern and stared to pay attention. She's always right, but I wasn't sure it was even possible so I thought I might be making it up a bit. Maybe I'll start working with her on making the response a little easier to deal with now that I know it's a real thing.
I would like to obtain a service dog for my friend. We live in BC Vancouver Island. Any info warmly welcome,!
