Hi, I'm newly diagnosed Menieres, am a musician. I was at Brass band rehearsal last night. We use earphones with a track that we hear but the audience doesn't and we play along to a drummer and vocalist and lead trumpet. Its my right ear that has a constant ocean roaring sound since March. If i put the backing track in my good ear I couldn't hear everyone well enough through my bad one. So I put it in my bad ear, which was comfortable in that I could hear adequately what I needed to hear and my good ear was available for everything is. The sound didn't sound clangy in my head which until recently was happening to all sound in that ear. This was for 2 hours rehearsal. I felt fine, but on the way home the world started to spin. I was able to pull over and eventually family had to come get me as certainly couldn't drive. I've been looking everywhere on line but I cant find explicit info on whether continuing to play music can be a trigger? Does anyone know if putting that sound into my ear like that would cause a vertigo attack please?
Kate, as a (former) clarinetist, playing never triggered any symptoms for me. Do whatever you can to treat the disease in these early stages. After 50 years of Meniere's I can no longer play or listen to music because of the distortion of sound.
Hi Kate, I've been in many situations where sound can irritate my affected ear and provoke MD symptoms. It's not always, but when my ear feels "sensitive" (even to sound), I typically put a piece of cotton to block out noise so that it doesn't irritate it even more. I hope you feel better!
I've continued to play semi-professionally since the onset of MM for me in 2008, mostly loud gigs and some recording with in-ears, over ears, all sorts of different sound systems - never once did I ever experience a flare up that could be attributed to the sound coming into my ears...
Hi Patricia thanks for response and so sorry for your experience. yes Im really taking it seriously and seeking advice from dietician, physio acupuncture and am planning to go back to audiologist to ask about any benefit for ear protection when i play for my affected ear. Im surprised at how little my GP seems to know. He basically offers no advice so I'm navigating my way
