Has anyone had general anesthesia for surgery trigger vertigo attacks? I'm having a major surgery for cancer in a few weeks and I've read that anesthesia and electrolyte imbalances from being under for so long can cause vertigo, dizziness and vomiting when you wake up. I'm already nervous about the surgery and thinking there could be a chance that it may trigger my menieres is causing me anxiety. It will be about a 4-5 hr surgery and I will be intubated, I would love to hear anyone's experience with surgery and menieres, good or bad. Thank you.
Hi Jenski, wishing you all the best for your surgery and that the cancer will be removed completely. I had an intestinal obstruction surgery last September - nothing happened. The anestesists did everything well, I guess. I got lots of iv infusions - everything fine. I had been vomiting for a week - no vertigo. You should discuss your fear and the MD with the anestesist and the other doctors in good time early. I could not do this because of the emergency, and it still was fine. Wishing you all the best again Lilja
P. S. : As my doctor said: we always know afterwards. Try to trust your doctors and their skills. . I soothed my nerves by thinking - they know what they do. L.
Hi Lilja, thank you for sharing your experience. I’m sorry you had to go through that emergency surgery but glad it went smoothly. It’s so good to hear that no vertigo was triggered during/after the procedure. I’m really sensitive to opioid pain killers so I’m sure there will be some vomiting from that. I will definitely be bringing my concerns up during my pre op appointment and make sure they understand how serious my vertigo can be. My last attack lasted 8 months, I wasn’t sure if it was ever going to go away. It’s funny the fear of the surgery triggering vertigo is making me more nervous than the actual procedure. Thanks again
