Can betahistine provide some permanent improvement by taking it only for a few months?

Yes, for some patients, this medication almost completely eliminates symptoms. I am among them, but I have a cochlear form of the disease with mild dizziness (for now).

 

I have been using 24mg of betahistine every 8 hours since 2017. I have tried to taper down to 16mg a few times with no success. The vomiting and dizziness come back within a couple of weeks after reducing the dosage. But every one has their own version of Ménière’s disease so you will have to play around to see what your MD responds to. All the best

 

I would not bet on it.
I had mild effects with low doses, much better with 3 times daily 48 mg.
Would not dare to reduce my betahistine if I am not forced to.

I am just looking into this per a specialist who said he can get it for me (I'm in the US) via a compounding pharmacy. But he wanted me to have vestibular testing as well. Insurance wouldn't cover it, though.

 

Before you pay what might be inflated prices for it from a compounding pharmacy, please look at ordering it from Canada. It could be significantly cheaper.

I'm in Canada so I haven't gone through the process that you would, but I would look at any Canadian online pharmacy and scope out the prices. It's approved here so they don't have to compound it like they would in the US. Then ask them what they need.

 

Thank you for the information! Would I still need a prescription? Or is that just for it to be compounded in the US? I am in a position where I "could" afford it but 180 to 200 a month (US) is a lot for my fixed income.

Also, I understand it expires or is less effective after a bit, so ordering a lot would require it to be blister packed, I imagine?

 

Yes you’ll need a prescription. These drugs have a long shelf life so I would get whatever generic is cheapest.
