I was thinking that since betahistine increases histamines in the body, but this is also what gives those bad gastric side effects, could DAO - diamine oxidase - enzyme supplement reduce those symptoms? DAO is the a supplement histamine-sensitive people can take to help them with digesting food without getting a reaction. DAO does this because it is the enzyme that the body uses to break down histamines.
Hi EAO, this is very good question. I became Histamine sensitive, I think since I take Betahistine. Sweating an getting a red neck. No stomach reactions. I also considered taking DAO, my pharmacist could not answer the question what is likely to happen. The higher Histamine levels are the intended effect of taking Betahistine, so if you take DAO you might cut off the effect of Betahistine. I wrote to the company producing my "Vasomotal" Betahistine, they could not answer my question. Maybe it would be interesting what your producing company says. Maybe it's a possibility if you take some stomach protection like Pantoprazol. Best wishes Lilja
I think with DAO it would only protect against the histamines effecting the stomach/gut when take together with betahistine. I would imagine that too much medicine gets absorbed systemically for the DAO to deactivate it in the entire body. Just my guess., though
