I first tried acyclovir and after the fourth day my ear cleared. It stayed clear for about four days. Then one day full next day clear. Then full for a long time.

Then I tried valacyclovir and about four days later my ear was clear. Stayed clear for about two weeks. Now it's been full for about 2 months.

I'm still taking 3 one gram valacyclovir per day.

Why do these drugs only work for a short period of time?

For many, they work for the long run, but not right away. In my cases it was two steps forward and one back for a long time. It seemed that in allergy season i backslid. Allergy shots seem to help me and finally it was all good all the time with few very minor setbacks. Remember, the ear has been damaged, to some degree probably permanently. Some of the damage will probably heal over time. But antivirals are jot an on off switch for mm. They stop one of the things that causes mm, they do not cause immediate complete healing of the ear. Give it time and try to take a load off the immune system and ear by decreasing other sources of stress.

I still have some issues when I have sinus congestion - there is a clear and immediate connection for me. So this time of year is hard as my sinuses struggle. :)
