I was diagnosed with Meniere's disease in december 2013 - woke up on Nov 20 with no basically no hearing in my right ear - felt like some stuffed a boxing glove in there - everything in that ear was tinny sounding. My ENT diagnosed it as SHL but then sent me to specialist after injections did not work. I am fortunate to only have the fullness and hearing loss - and not the bad symptoms like I am sure most - if not all of you have - but this has debilitated me. Three weeks ago I had a double mastectomy and I am right now - dealing with both - believe it or not - the cancer I can deal with - the ear - I cannot. I am lost and alone and have everything to live for - cancer is gone - did not spread anywhere - but I still feel ALONE and some days do not want to wake up. It has been 6 months now and the whooshing/machine noise in my ear makes me so frustrated I cannot work. I do - but all I want to do is cry. WHY IS THIS SO FRIKEN HARD????? 53 years old and I feel like I am 85.....i lost 20 lbs in 2 months......If one more person tells me - you are just going to have to get used to it - I am going to SCREAM :(

There are lots of treatments to try, don't despair! There are diet changes ( Heal Your Headache by Bucholz), anti-virals, SERC, Vitamin C - browse the old forum http://www.menieres.org/forum/index.php/board,2.0.html

Don't depend on your doctors except for them to rule out other causes.

I hear you! I also agree with Don that doctors can help to some extent, but ultimately you have to do tons of research and find out what works for you.
    Bless all,

    I_MISS,

I also have cochlear hydrops which is menieres but with hearing loss in stead of vertigo. I had great success with antivirals and allergy treatments. Prednisone is often helpful too. If you go to the old database board and look at a thread called Success Stories, you will see that it is very likely you don't just have to learn to live with this. There are numerous threads on antivirals there as well. And as soon as people get transferred over to this new board, others will come along with suggestions too. Don't give up!

Wonderful news you are cancer free! and you are not alone, as June said the forums just moved and people are starting to move over here. We understand and yes look through the old boards database section, lots of great info and treatments that doctors would not tell you about but studies back them up. Only thing is where MM is concerned 1 treatment doesn't work for everyone unfortunately. So it is trial and error.

Like Vicki said, it is definitely trial and error. But I wanted to say that I too have Cochlear Hydrops (ear fullness, ringing, roaring, fluctuating hearing loss) and I had tried a lot of things but finally found relief with Lemon Bioflavonoids. I don't know of you have tried that route yet. I was very skeptical and like you I was feeling helpless. I had lived with the roaring for 7 months and was so frustrated when people would say to just "live with it". I was convinced I would never find anything that would help, but I did. It just took time. I know it is frustrating.

Sorry that you have to deal with this crazy disease. I have tinnitus in both ears. Over the course of about 6 months, I've habituated to it. The only issue I have with it now is if I wake up early and I want to get back to sleep and I sometimes can't because of the tinnitus. I only hear the tinnitus during the day when I start thinking about it.

Habituating to tinnitus means reaching a state of mind where you no longer have a negative emotional response to your tinnitus. Once I became indifferent to it, I habituated very quickly. It does bother me every once in awhile. I then stop thinking about it and the noise returns to the background.

If you think it would help, look into talking to a counselor that specializes in chronic disease. I'm thinking about seeing a counselor for my depression issues. Attack this crazy ass disease from all angles!!! This forum is a great place to find support and for information that help in building and implementing an attack plan.

It really does get better I-MISS-ME! It just takes a little work. :)

I am seeing a counselor and it just does not seem to help. I too have it in both ears and my left ear is the one with the hearing loss - it just sounds so weird. I just cannot find "that place" where you are talking about. I feel like I am standing on a cliff and just staring down and don't know what to do. I have tried everything to get me out of this horrible place and I just cannot find a way out. I TRY EVERY DAy to be positive.....and here I am....alone and no one seems to understand. My family is scared for me right now as am I.

Have you looked through the database about MAV and other treatments yet? I think once you start trying different treatments you will feel like you are doing something about it and it may help you feel better plus most likely one of them give you some relief.

Miss Me, what have the doctors done so far? What are you trying? There are a lot of people who get some kind of relief from one or more many options...there are a lot of things you can try. I know it's scary when you're not in control of your own head, I'm in the same boat. My issue is different than yours but something happened to me some months ago and I can't get "me" back. You're not alone and we all understand. The fact that you have beat cancer is awesome and amazing!!! You can get through this!!! What have you tried so far?

  12. "You have cancer" Now those 3 words would feel like a death sentence to me. "You have Meniere's" That I can live with.

I miss me, I used to say that a lot. I had all the symptoms but I started an anti viral treatment and am much, much better. I do still get the tinnitus sometimes, especially with weather changes and during high stress intervals, but it is nowhere near as bad as it was.
You need the right Dr! I see an Otolaryngologist and he has listened to my questions and requests.
Congrats on the cancer fight ending in your favor. That tells me that you're a fighter. You can deal with this and as you can see, there are a lot of people here who can help you get through it.
I hope all of the responses help you. You are NOT alone!

    Miss Me,

Don't give in - I was in a bad place with MM. Antivirals improved things but the real improvement came with allergy treatments. I'm now in my 4th year of self-injected allergy shots and have not had any hint of vertigo in 3+ years. I've lost about 50% rt side hearing and it's been stable for quite some time. All in all not bad -as far as I'm concerned.
Hoping you have the best of luck and health going forward.

    John

You are not going to have to just get used to it. There are many options as I'm sure you've read here.
I hope you're feeling better today.
