Hello. I have read for some time about Betahistine for vertigo but was under the impression that it was not available in the U.S. My doctor prescribed it for me and I found a compound pharmacy close to where I live to make it for me. I'm only a month into the prescription but I have noticed significant improvement. I no longer have to lean against a wall to slip on my sandals. I'm sure some of you can relate. I am a skeptic, so I went into this thinking it wouldn't work but it has helped me. I know a month is a small sample size but I'm hopeful the good feelings continue. Is there anyone out there reading this that has tried Betahistine? Please respond and let me know your experience.
My cousin, who lives in England, has taken it for about 6 years and has had no problems in that time. She said her doctors who had originally diagnosed her with Meniere's recently changed the diagnosis to endolymphatic hydrops. I don't know if that makes a difference. I tried to do some research for peer reviewed journal articles on it, and found study results inconclusive although there are many anecdotal reports of success.
Holy crap, beta/serc. OK, Dr. Hain has full page on this stuff. To summarize, he says, there's no good evidence that says it works...but that he personally thinks it MIGHT work. Dude sees A LOT of patients in his Chicago practice. My doctor prescribed it. Kind of as a precondition to him giving me another VNS surgery. I'm gonna give it a try. Gotta go through a Canadian pharmacy cuz my California pharmacy can't find it. Go Alberta!
I take 16g x 4 daily. You can get it at any Canadian Pharmacy and they will ship it to you. I personally preferred the USA compounded capsule. I have been on it for a few year and i believe it helps me. Karina
I have been taking 24mg 3x/day for about 4 years and I think it does help. It didn't stop a terrible stretch I had this winter, but I think overall it does do something or else I wouldn't go to the trouble or expense to get it (since I'm in the US I get it from Canada, out of pocket). I'm actually afraid to stop taking it.
Betahistine (brand name Serc) is widely prescribed throughout the rest of the world outside the USA. Serc is believed to help blood flow in the inner ear. A function mimicked within the JOH regimen by vinpocetine I believe. Not a cure but an important palliative. Standard dosage is 16mg three times a day. PleaseNoDizzy has company in the ‘not wishing to stop taking it’ camp.
I've been taking it for roughly 4 1/2 months now, just got my script adjusted from 8mg to 24mg, he prescribed 3x daily, but I have to pay for it out of pocket so I only take 2 daily. I can't say that it's done anything for me. I've been on JOH regime for the exact same time. Do they help? I don't know. I still have all symptoms and occasional vertigo, but maybe it would be worse without the Betahistine and JOH.....I just don't know any more.
