I was saddened to learn of the untimely death of “60 Minutes” news correspondent Bob Simon whom I greatly admire and respect for the thought provoking, memorable and sometimes heartbreaking stories he has shared with the world over the years. He was killed in a car crash on Wednesday when the livery car he was a passenger in sideswiped another vehicle and then careened into the metal divider separating the northbound and southbound traffic lanes. He wasn’t wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. A friend of mine lost her 17 year old son in 2004 when the driver of the car he was a passenger in lost control of the vehicle and struck a guardrail. The car then flipped on its side and my friend’s son was partially ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene. He wasn’t wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. The driver, who WAS wearing a seatbelt, was treated for minor injuries and released from the hospital just a couple of hours after the accident. Just two examples of lives that could have possibly been saved had they been wearing their seatbelts. I never fail to fasten my seatbelt and any passengers traveling with me have to buckle up as well. I refuse to start my car until they do. I even buckle up the pet carrier when I take my cat to the vet. It’s a very simple thing to do that takes just a couple of seconds but those seconds could very well save not only YOUR life but the lives of your passengers as well. DON’T FORGET TO ALWAYS BUCKLE UP
