Hello friends! I thought I would bring up the topic of DHEA in these forums. This is a hormone produced by the adrenal gland. Its levels naturally decline as we age. Since MD is generally a disease of middle age and beyond, and since DHEA has immune boosting, anti-inflammatory and vasodilative properties.... For anyone over/near 50, I bring forth for your consideration the notion that taking a DHEA supplement might, as part of a broader regime of supplements, help. For those of you who have experienced prolonged high levels of stress - this is definitely something to consider. This article covers it pertty well: DHEA Restoration Therapy - Life Extension You can have your doctor measure your DHEA levels if you wish. And they may be "normal". But pay attention to the actual number relative to the range. For example, if the reference range is 0.8 - 6.5 units and your number is 1.2.... then while you might not be "clinical" from their perspective, and in a "disease state" it stands to reason that you are "subclinical" as you fall on the low end of that broad scale and may be feeling some consequences of that. A more real life example of this "subclinical" concept, if you get less than 60 mg of Vitamin C per day you get the disease called scurvy. So that is the bar/line/aim for many doctors - the point at which you get really sick with a disease. However, it is pretty well known that if you want to actually have more optimal health, the numbers are more like 1000mg per day (plus) where we should be aiming. It's sold in 25, 50 and 100mg sizes. If you are not under the care of a physician then I would even cut the 25mg in half and start there to see how you feel. It is not available in some countries (like Canada) though freely available in the States. (The Canadian Govt has banned the sale of ALL hormone or herbs with any hint of hormonal action, not specifically DHEA). Not sure about other countries but there is always eBay! Anyway, something to think about!
