Help with snack and breakfast ideas

    I'm still trying to figure out what I can eat, and I was hoping that maybe some of you could give me some new ideas--especially for breakfast and snacks. Lunch and dinner are fairly easy because I usually have meat and vegetables.

    I've been gluten free for years already. Now I'm trying to eat very little sodium, as well as foods that are higher in Lysine than Arginine. I have also suffered from migraines for years (and still haven't completely ruled out MAV in addition to my MD), so am trying to cut out most of the foods from "Heal Your Headache" although I haven't done the complete diet yet. The combination of these restrictions doesn't leave a whole lot of food options!

    In the past, my favorite snacks have been raw nuts, square of 90% dark chocolate, cheese, any thing coconut, and raisins. All of these favorites are pretty much nixed right now. So snacks I know I can eat are many fruits, raw veggies, unsalted chips. I really need some other ideas.

    Also for breakfast, in the past I did eggs and bacon OR fruit smoothie OR oatmeal OR grits. I still eat eggs, but without salt they leave a lot to be desired. I occasionally have 1/2 to 1 piece of low sodium bacon with it. I've started eating some GF toast but I've tried in the past to stay away from it. My smoothies usually have kale and various fruit including bananas (supposedly a migraine trigger) and blueberries (high arginine), but I'm trying to make them now without those. Grits and Oatmeal I think also are high arginine. I also sometimes have homemade yogurt, but I think that is also supposedly a migraine trigger according to the book. I would love some more breakfast ideas.

    My one lunch/dinner question is about bone broth. I make homemade chicken broth all the time and have a freezer full of it. We are huge soup eaters and I know that bone broth is super healthy. Gelatin is listed as a high arginine food and somewhere I did read that bone broth would be included since gelatin is created while making the broth. It would be very hard for me to give this up-- does anyone have any additional information/advice on homemade bone broth and arginine levels?

    I can't really give advice since after 25 years of MM I've eliminated all but probably 10 foods. I will tell you some of my worst triggers are oatmeal, prunes, raisins, & whole wheat flour (which you don't eat). I think it may be these foods contain mold. Good luck!

    I keep hearing oatmeal is a trigger, I thought
    Oatmeal was supposed to be good ,maybe
    It was steal cut oats? Also what about
    Mold and food? Thanks

    I love blackberries!!!!

    Diet wise try the Mediterranean diet.
    Cut the sugars out, msg, processed food.

    Give Blackberries a try, I thought I would not like it but now that's all I eat for my berries and cherries variety.

    I like greek yogurt over regular yogurt. I eat A LOT of fresh fruit and veggies. Sometimes I'll add greek yogurt to the smoothies. Good luck!

    I feel for you! It's a challenge. I'm also gluten-free, cow-dairy-free, trying to keep arginine and salt low, and avoiding migraine triggers.

    I don't seem to have a problem with yogurt. I eat goat-dairy. Dairy is good on the lysine. I don't have a problem with oatmeal.

    Some good filling snacks: a corn thin with a slice of goat cheese, goat yogurt, corn flakes and goat milk. Cashews, pistachios, and sunflower seeds are all lower arginine that other nuts (and/or the ratio is better), so I eat those, and cashew butter, in moderation. Avocado--cut one in half and spoon it out--yum! Fruits and veggies aren't as filling but they are great snacks. Papaya is particularly good with the lysine/arginine ratio. I've been able to get some less expensive papaya (the big ones) from Mexico here in California and have been enjoying that. I find that eating dates can help when I'm craving chocolate--also in moderation.

    Dates dipped in unsalted peanut butter is a great , high protein and fiber, no sodium snack.
    Breakfast= oatmeal - add in frozen berries, scoop of peanut butter, flax seeds, chia seeds.

    Yogurt can be high in lactic acid, which is converted to glucose by the liver in an energy demanding process, this can cause hypoglycaemia and therefore migraine. I low fat greek yogurt as most of the lactic acid is strained, I also strain it myself for about four hours. It's good with fruit and marmalade (which is high in useful flavonoids for people with inner ear symptoms if the peel is included).
    I've done a lot of diets to improve health over the years, mostly with bad results, I find regular protein and sugar along with avoiding hard to digest foods like starch and fibre works best for me. I avoid gluten and keep polyunsaturated fats low as they increase estrogen/serotonin/histamine and nitric oxide.
    I think low sodium is a bad idea for general health for almost everybody, no idea if it would help specific symptoms but for me the balance is not worth it.
    Fruit and dairy (without enzymes or gums) is what I think works best for me, my caloric needs are high so I tend to eat meat and potatoes with some fat a few times a day too or I'd have to eat 24/7.
    I hope to live on Haagen Dazs one day. ;D
