I have never heard of this before. Today I received a phone by an "IRS agent" stating that I owed back taxes and had not responded to in formation by mail. I was told they are filing 4 charges against me with a court of law. Two were, "Willful misrepresentation of tax information and Theft by deception." When I asked why I had not received this information by mail, they recited the wrong address. When I corrected the address and asked that the information be resent, I was told it was too late for that. I was threatened with arrest, wages and benefits frozen, confiscation of bank funds, a lien on my property, my employer would be contacted for garnishment of wages. I was insistant that this was an error, at which time I was told I could make a payment of $2486.93, which is the total amount I'm being charged with for this misinformation. I gave them my husbands cell number. I figured since he does our finances, he could deal with it. I also gave my husband the name and number of who I had spoken with. Ironically, when you call this number, it does say, "you have reached the IRS." Husband said, "this is a scam, but I'll call." He called and had an abusive verbal conversation with the party who answered. I called the police and spoke to a detective who says, "unfortunately this has been going on a long time and that they can only make the public aware that this is a scam and the IRS doesn't make phone calls such as these, but sends the information in the mail." He also said, "you would be surprised at how many people get frightened with the impending arrest and such that they make the payment." I also contacted my attorney, who said the same thing the police did, but took the phone number and name and said he's going to call. You cannot contact the IRS Fraud Hotline by phone as you go through a series of press this number, press that number, and never get to a live person. I have to say I was quite shaken up by this phone call. Thank goodness I know not to give any personal information by phone! I just want everyone to be aware that this is occurring. I'd also like to know if anyone has had an experience like this?
Sometimes I get these messages left on my home answering machine. They are Frauds, trying to take advantage of old. Call them back and leave a message about how they can reach your tax attorney.
