My husband has been taking Valtrex 1 GM 3xDay for 4 weeks, now tapering it to 2XDay for the next 3 weeks. Our ENT wants to lower the dose due to concerns about his liver. With that concern being stated, we're going to get his blood checked. But has anyone here who has been taking it long term, had liver problems?

It is extremely rare, and not something to be concerned about if you get a yearly blood test to show no changes.

My understanding is that if a person is genetically pre-disposed or already has a liver issue than valtrex may compound the issue but typically well tolerated. I get my blood tested annually to be safe.

I think being predisposed to kidney problems might be more of an issue. Drink plenty of water and ask your doctor. Antivirals were the one drug that never gave me side effects even over months.

And keep in mind that the "goal" is to taper down to 1x day - regardless of the potential side effects. Some people need to be on the higher dose for longer; some are not able to get down to 1x day. But I share because I don't want you or your husband to believe that going down to 1x day is necessarily bad.
