BumbleBea - I'm pleased for Karen8 now that I know the reason for her delight in acquiring hearing aids. How can a question asking what all the congrats are for be misconstrued as bullying. It was not intended to be bullying in any way, shape, or form. It was a sincere puzzlement to me. And I don't get the sense that Karen8 considered it bullying, as she responded to my querying with her reason for rejoicing. I would never deliberately belittle anyone for any reason. Yes, I wear hearing aids, am almost totally deaf in my right ear, have some hearing in my left ear due to the Menieres. What a difference they have made for me.
Congrats!!! Yes, those of us with severe tinnitus it is ubiquitous with menieres, do other vestibular disorders lose their hearing? But, I've seen quite a few "selfies" on the forum sans hearing aids.
For people with extreme distortion a hearing aid does not help. Likewise, total loss in one ear cant be aided. I have total loss in one ear and some impairment in the other. I have had two hearing aids over the years and after a period of time quit using both either because they were not effective in channeling sound to the 'good' ear or when they did they increased distortion. In either case, i do not think you could have seen them in a casual picture. The dr tells me the best bet for me is wither BAHA which requires a permanent implant in my skull or the new Sound Byte which involves the tooth. I have some interest in the Sound Byte but it is $8000. I am not interested in the BAHA. The $8000 is a little high for me as I function very well as is even with only one ear and i have a poor track record with hearing aids to date. So not everyone with hearing impairment wears aids and many including myself wear them only occasionally.
I don't wear nor need hearing aids so far and as I posted before I have no hearing loss due to MM. My hearing loss is mild and not due to any illness or disease.
I hope you are able to hold onto your hearing forever! That is one of the blessings for people for whom antivirals work. They stop further progression of the disease and further damage to hearing or balance.
But back to the main point of the thread, Congrats to Karen! It is such a blessing to regain hearing however we can!
Thanks! June I hope so too. my last hearing test which was just a few months showed no decrease in hearing, it was exactly the same as last years test. The audiologist was very pleased as was I
I have lost my low tones and these I am beginning to think are set wrong. I am still have trouble hearing low tones. LOL The lady who set them up didn't have much experience with MD but she was very nice and excited to learn on me. All that being said I do hear over all much much better
Do you have followup appointments scheduled for adjustments? I think this should be included in the price.
I was told to give it a couple of weeks and make note of the sounds that need to be adjusted. Then my audiologist went through everything - increased the volume on certain tones, reduced others; adjusted the tinny sound to more normal...etc.... She made several adjustments over the first couple of months. Don't be afraid to go back in and let them know what you need/are missing; making those updates is easy and quick for them. Again, very happy for you. I waited probably too long to get mine - not because of finances...perhaps delusions that it would get better or ego..or both!
