I really think physical therapy can be done exclusively on one's own. At least if your MM isn't constant. I was assigned about 12 sessions. I went to 4 but should have only gone to 2. You can get the gist pretty quickly while there. It's just various body movements. In fact I asked my therapist, "do they let you come up with tasks on your own?" She said yes. So these "skills exercises" aren't sent over from MIT. Just use some imagination and come up with your own. There's also ideas on YouTube. Search stuff like "balancing exercises" or "physical rehab after brain trauma", etc. Just saying, you can save your money and time. Plus no stress from driving, or worrying if you have to miss your appointment because you're suddenly dizzy and they STILL charge you. Forget that garbage. You can buy the equipment needed cheaply on Amazon. The same stuff they use at the clinic. Balance balls. Tennis balls. Spongy squares to balance on. Small bean bags for tossing/juggling. Balance disc. Etc. I came up with more than 30 balance exercises in just a few days. I'll post them sometime if anybody wants me to.
I would agree that once you get the hang of it that you could do it on your own, but I would certainly be cautious. A lot of people start physical/vestibular therapy because of serious balance issues. There were several times my therapist had to "catch" me because I lost my balance that badly. I'd use extreme caution in going it alone.
My appointments were every 4 weeks. During each appointment I was assigned excercises I was supposed to do twice a day each day. I was also given " the Next " step excercises in case I progressed quickly. During each appointment I was assessed and given more challenging set of exercises. I do agree it can be all done on your own.
I regained the ability to walk by walking a lot, first with a walker, then a cane, then on my own etc etc. The therapist in the hospital said 'you have to do what you cant do so you will be able to do it'. Just start out gradually and make your environment safe. Stay away from ladders, traffic etc for a while.
