Im going to my doctor this week .I will present info to request antivirals. I read that some brands are not good. Could someone please tell me if I should request getting Valtrex or acyclovir and what brand. Im very debilitated from Mienere's and cry everyday. I had a sac surgery years ago but now I'm doing so bad.

Dr Gacek recommends valacylovir now, it seems to work better for most than acyclovir but I take acyclovir and I have been symptoms free for 3 years.
Only warning about valacyclovir is that some members have found certain manufacturers do not suppress symptoms as good as others.
The brand name is Valtrex, valacyclovir is the generic name

As Vicki said, valacyclovir seems to work better than acyclovir, so if you can, you might as well start there.

To add to the confusion, there are different generic brands of valacyclovir, and different people here are having different effects with them. Someone was trying to get a database started about that, and I think that would be a very useful tool. It may be tricky to influence this with the pharmacy. The one brand I'd particularly avoid is Mylan. There have been many negative reports about that.

There has been a lot positive said about Northstar. I've done great with Ranbaxy. I didn't do as well with Cadista, but someone else did better with it.

Thank you both. I hope I get the prescription and much needed relief if I do, from this horrid ear disease.
