Just a couple of thoughts. Physicians, by and large, know very little about nutrition and even less about menu planning. Also, dietitians (with a "t" not at "c") are known as Registered Dietitians, not Certified. Finally, my suggestion is to plan a way of eating that includes a variety of food. And, how do we know that the optimal serum "vitamin" D level is to be greater than 50 year-round. Perhaps the body is designed for serum levels to fluctuate through-out the year depending on the sun's angle. Too many unknowns, in my book, to suggest that most people pop a daily vitamin/mineral supplement. Just a couple of anecdotal stories: I remember, back in the day, reading an article written by a well-known cardiologist. He said that Vit E and Vit A supplementation was critical to everyone. Well look how that turned out. And what about the millions of little old ladies (and others, of course) knocking back calcium supplements year after year because they're good for the bones. I wonder how much calcium deposition they now have in blood vessels. The problem with vitamin and mineral supplementation is that we don't know what we don't know.
