    TWILIGHT YEARS

Days of youthful promise left well behind
A tired old soul, destined to be alone
Wondering about the fate of lost friends
On the park bench, he now sits on his own

Thoughts of days past, flicker and slowly fade
Children he had, now left to go their own way
All grown, and raising families of their own
Maybe they will come over and see him today

Hands in his pockets with shoulders hunched
A cold wind ruffles what’s left of his grey hair
The odd tear trickles down the side of his face
His sad old eyes showing a look of despair

Each new day seems to go faster than the last
No one here to talk to, and no one left to share
None concerned about his wants or thoughts
Living out his life, alone with no one to care

Light fades, as the sun dips below the horizon
A slight twitch to his lips indicates a faint smile
It’s time for the old man to head to his abode
Old memories have warmed his heart for a while

Returning to his small, lonely, one-room flat
With its cot propped up against the far wall
Only the barest of necessities furnish his home
Preventing the chance of any unexpected fall

Give a little reflection for those who sit alone
Spare a small moment and think of their plight
Do we give any thought to those in their sunset
Or forget them, the moment they’re out of sight
