If you're a bit tired of the same Christmas music, here's a bit of a diversion. It's Zoey Daschnell (not even gonna try and spell it) and M. Ward. Kind of a jazzy-hipster Christmas album. Real easy going. Here's one song from it. The whole album is called "Christmas Party" and they call themselves She & Him. I love her almost as much as I love Parker Posey. Would love to go rock climbing with them so they could catch my fall.

More Kurt Vile today. Need chill music to survive these insane times.

Sometimes I talk too much but I gotta get it out
But I don’t wanna talk, I only wanna listen
My baby talks soft, my ears are always ringing now
Humming a sad song when I’m alone
But you gotta be alone to figure things out sometimes
Be alone, when even in a crowd of friends and not so
Sometimes of whom you just can’t distinguish but
Thank god for the former, yeah

Thanks Autumn. Hopefully things will get easier as my AV treatment continues and things get more sane at work. But that excerpt above is why I love Kurt Vile. Quirky but really hits home.

  6. “Goodbye Honey” by Ryan Adams

I think it’s admirable he keeps going with his music even though his Meniere’s gets debilitating at times. Love his voice and the harmonica in this song.

    Autumn,

I love Ryan Adams. The song you posted was pretty good. The harmonica was a bit too harsh for me, at the moment.

I used to be addicted to his song "City Rain, City Streets". The chiming guitar note that frames the song is haunting. Love how expressive his voice gets during the last thirty seconds. That always gets me. It's my favorite Ryan Adams song. Make it your favorite too.

I wonder if people here think we're talking about Bryan Adams.

  8. At least HE’S in on the joke/has a sense of humor about it! It would stink if he didn’t think it was funny.

I’ll have to give that one a listen...

    Michael Manring - Selene

One of the most haunting songs I know played on a bass, and a very unusual one at that. Manring is another one of these unknown virtuoso players, well worth the listen.

Pretty trippy. I had to listen without looking because he kept having to adjust his machine heads. Which was annoying to me. Maybe he should have done that before he got on stage. Just saying.

That’s the point of the Zon Hyperbass... you can change the key of each string independently at the tuners as well as all the strings via an adjustable bridge. That’s the way he’s changing pitch on those harmonics.

Buddy Rich - The Pacific Jazz Years

I lost this CD years ago and finally found someone had uploaded it to YouTube. Ultimate hype!

  15. The point was evident, but too flipping distracting. It just seemed like he took too long to adjust. I would have liked to tell him to please hold still. It’s like being at a concert and wanting to go,”SHHHH,” only, that would completely defeat the purpose.::snickering::

I see. OK, that's kinda cool then. There's a Satriani live video where he searching and finding harmonics using feedback from his monitors. I'll post it sometime.

I'm a guitar freak. I can honestly say this is the best guitar solo I've ever heard...of its kind (meaning non song related). Not only is it technically wowzers, it also grooves musically. Something that can't be said about most of these kind of things. I've been watching this one for about 10 years. Still in awe.

From a purely technical standpoint, that was amazing. Those 1/64th notes are incredible. And to think, this is a guy that I've never even heard of. I thought it grooved pretty good but it would take me a few more listens to get into it, simply because of the wow factor.

I'm a big guitar (and drum) fan as well, I own a strat but can't play a lick on the thing. I'd rather listen to the masters. One of my favorite soloists was Zappa, if you dive into his work and get past the Top 10 Inappropriate Songs List he was a pure compositional genius, and could belt out a soulful solo.

    Pupper, this one's for you.

Frank Zappa - Do Not Pass Go (solo)

Typical of some of his mid 1980's shows were these "stream of consciousness, freedom vs frustration" solos. Though technically not the best player, he leaves his emotions on the stage. This one is one of my faves, it's from the double album "Guitar" featuring nothing but guitar solos from that time period.

MBG, I listened to that Zappa song about 5 times over the last couple of days. I think I finally got it, and do like it. At first I thought it might be a joke. Like some kid's first guitar lesson. But yeah, something finally clicked. I added it to my Avante Garde/Drive You Crazy if Not in Right Mood playlist. Maybe there's hope for me and Zappa. Been struggling to like him for decades.

As mentioned previously, we seriously diverge when it comes to complex music. That stuff is well above my paygrade. But since we're both fixated on guitars, we can probably come within shouting distance of mutually liked music.

Yeah, I like that Brazilian kid I posted earlier for the fact...as you say...that no one's even heard of him. He just posted from his bedroom one day and blew people's face off. (I'm sure there's more to him that that, but I like the myth in my mind.)

To swerve in the opposite direction for a moment...good example of minimum notes/simplicity, maximum feel. Not sure if you're a Lizzy fan, but this guy plays all their songs with precision. I like how, for a hard rock band, they mixed in a lazy-home-on-the-range country flavor to this song.

I've asked him twice where I can get that t-shirt and he never responds.

Solid arrangement and a real nice SG to boot.

Since you showed some Zappa interest, here’s one that’s a little more accessible. Zappa with his son Dweezil doing Chunga’s Revenge. Only 18 here, and clearly a much more accomplished player than his father, being that he was trained by the likes of Seve Vai and Eddie VanHalen. Enjoy!
