    Hm. Interesting.

I think you may have misread the third paragraph in the article you provided, where Debbie Nathan states "Shirley feels after a short time, that she is not really getting the attention she needs from Dr. Wilbur".

I know little of Shirley Mason, nor have I read Sybil, Sybil Exposed, or seen the TV movie based on the former, however considering you're fascinated by the subject, you may also be interested in the factitious disorder Munchausen syndrome & Munchausen syndrome by proxy.

Whether Ms Mason fabricated her symptoms to gain the attention of Dr Wilbur, or Dr Wilbur manipulated an already unstable Mason to believe she had a dissociative disorder so to hoist herself within her own psychiatric circle, or further financial opportunities via her relationship with Flora Rheta Schreiber, Munchausen syndrome or Munchausen syndrome by proxy can explain said outcome, or the foundation required to establish given capital.

I've become interested in MSbP of late myself, as it's not uncommon to see this syndrome manifest itself culturally. For example, group A asserts group B is oppressed by a fictitious group C (the disorder), or grossly exaggerates the struggle of group B so to gain attention & praise via virtue signalling. This then becomes a vicious cycle as group B develops a victimhood complex, or, due to group A's soft bigotry of low expectations, becomes enabled by group A to remain infantilised. While this occurs, group A manipulate ignorant onlookers to assume they are indeed virtuous, when in fact they are the catalyst of group B's struggle, or prevent group B from progressing beyond any point they can no longer use to promote themselves. It is at this stage that a form of cultural codependency occurs also.

I agree with you, it's a fascinating subject.

    Welcome to the forum, Maggie.

    Hi Nathan,
there is no edit function, but I did try to correct my mistake, was instead of wasnt. in my next post. :)

Thanks for your very interesting reply. Your last paragraph describes what it's like on this forum sometimes.
I did hear of Munchausen and Munchausen by proxy. That's also boggling to me. I read of a mother who would make her kid sick repeatedly so the mother would get attention. Yikes.

    Ah, my bad.

Indeed. Human behaviour. It's not so surprising, we do after all share 50% of our DNA with a banana *laffs.

I get to make the floral center pieces for the celebration of Sunday.

We do this thing. We raffle off the center pieces to the highest bidder for each one and the money goes to my grandson towards his college fund.

    Could be useful, save it.

I just learned that my body can't stay still. I'll probably be up all night, sighs.
