People often ask, "what's the matter?" It dawns on me that this common phrase sounds sophisticated. There's been a matter detected and they're imploring as to the nature of it. What is the matter son? Mmm, the matter is quite dark mummy. Let us talk of pleasing things.
Oh, you guys. Thank you so much. :-* I feel pretty lucky to have those two little girls in my life. I'm never happier than when I'm spending time with them. You know how it is, Melc. You do so many fun things with your grand kids. The memories you make will last them a lifetime. Marta, you've got a few years to wait, but when the time comes, you're going to love being a grandma. Grand kids......I highly recommend them.
I'm channeling Freddie Mercury today. Can't stop singing a Bohemian Rhapsody. " easy come, easy go, little high , little low"
I like lines like the one you quoted, that promote a stoic sensibility. One such line is from the Motorhead song "Ace of Spades". "You win some, you lose some, it's all the same to me." You have to hear the way he sings it though. His rough voice and tough nonchalance doesn't really translate to the page. Then there's the "Stairway to Heaven" line: Yes, there are two paths you can go by But in the long run There's still time to change the road you're on
"And a new day will dawn for those who stand long And the forests will echo with laughter" Those lyrics are resonating with me theses days. I love Stairway to Heaven; it's on my playlist. All the lyrics strike a chord with me. I hadn't heard Ace of Spades, Pupper. I found it on YouTube and get your point about hearing it means more than reading it. Thanks for introducing me to that. Feel free to add more!
I was going to include the Zeppelin line you quoted above, on a card for my sister in law who's in chemo. But I thought it might come across as trite. Or, I don't know...too easy for me to say. Me not fighting for my life life like she is. Plus she's from another culture and just wouldn't get it. It'd come off like cheerleader-like, "hey just keep pushin babe and we'll all be laughing it up soon!" But like you, I love the line myself, and often think of it. The song was out of favor for about 2 decades (for silly critically snobbish/fashionable reasons not worth going into), but now its greatness is seen in a clear light. I've never abandoned the song, even when Robert Plant couldn't stop disparaging it. I like the live version just as much, especially as it ads a different structure to the guitar solo section. You may want to check out the Kennedy Center Honors performance of it with Barack and Michelle Obama in attendance. Robert Plant sure didn't look like he wanted to disown the song then!
By live version I mean the "Song Remains the Same" movie version. The Kennedy Honors is a separate, but still great, thing.
I remember all the todo about Stairway to Heaven. I could never figure out how to play it backwards! Thanks for the heads up on the Kennedy Centre performance. That was awesome; gave me goosebumps. My 9 year old grandsons sang in a choir that performed John Lennon's Imagine. They performed a Cappella. It was very moving. It was the lyrics, but something about a group of 9 year old singing so passionately made it extra special. Music is my mood altering drug of choice so it's always good to add to the repertoire. You were wise in your restraint of quoting those lyrics. It's usually a good idea to know your audience.
Was it odd hearing kids sing the line, "and no religion too"? "Imagine" should bore me, but it doesn't. However "Something", George Harrison's song, is beloved. Even Sinatra covered it. I'm not big on it. It's ok. Puts me to sleep. And McCartney's "Maybe I'm Amazed" is a radio classic, but just terribly tedious to me. All my life I thought he was saying "Baby I'm Amazed". But then I found out it was "maybe", it was even worse. How wishy washy. He's not sure if he's amazed?
It as the odd for me to hear the kids sing that line. It was delightful. It was a school choir that was performing at Christmas time . The school has a quite diverse population and I believe the music teacher chose that song for a reason. In my opinion, John Lennon was the best Beatle, his yoko ono phase not withstanding. What the rest of hem did after their breakup was meh!
