Can I also recommend some Charles Bukowski, Nick Cave, 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance', 'Truck' (if it's still in print), Sam Fussel's 'Muscle', William Least Heat Moon's 'Blue Highways' and (albeit this last one is potentially 'high risk' for a kid at the cross roads) Hunter S Thompson.

Yeah, Hunter S Thompson may push the envelope. However I resorted to Nietzsche & Jim Morrison for guidance at that age. Just look at me now. Flawless.

Oh, Jim Morrison - of course! I forgot about him. Had posters of him all over my room, visited his grave at Pere Lachaise in Paris when I was 18. I still have a copy of his "Only published poetry" The Lords and The New Creatures. It's pretty gruesome stuff. Here's a sample:

    Snakeskin jacket
    Indian eyes
    Brilliant hair

    He moves in disturbed
    Nile insect
    Air

If the boy's going to read Jim Morrison he'd better read some Aldous Huxley too.

Sports.....get him in some physically intense activity and Vipassana. Reading heavy stuff at that age only bumps up trouble.

When you do, do so realistically. Think not of the back of the bowl, but rather the cloud around it.

A woman?!?! That kind needs a woman about like a starfish needs a jackhammer. I would love to get him sitting, he's a little manic right now.

I keep reading this topic as it's interesting to read about everybody's readothology :D. I don't have anything really to add because I haven't read a book in a very long time now. I remember someone saying once that 'we' should start up a book club. It seems as though you all have. The last book I really remember reading and enjoying was Stephen's Kings "The Stand". Long time, right? Self-help books don't count ;)

Such intelligent people on this site, I really mean that. Silly sometimes but even that's fun.

Wino and I are not intelligent. Maybe Maybe Michael is somewhat intelligent. I don't think Rose is either because her son picks her books.
