Hi - just found this forum. I was diagnosed by an ENT 4 years ago after exhaustive testing including audio exams, MRI, CT scan, negative for BPPV, etc. I had been plagued with vertigo 2 years in a row. The 2nd time came after 11 months of mostly feeling normal. And it was far worse. I was laid out for 3 months. Vertigo most days. Almost constant nausea with some vomiting. On 2 occasions, I had actually been violently thrown to the ground by an invisible force, the weirdest thing I have ever experienced. Perhaps this is what you refer to as a drop attack.
After the incurable Meniere's diagnosis, I said, Nope, not doing that. I had noticed that my symptoms came up every spring, which I had mentioned to the Dr, so I decided to start taking Zyrtec March-May during the tree pollen season, every year, and haven't had vertigo for 4 years. I thought the doctors must have been wrong.... However, even over these past 4 years, I was still experiencing intermittent tinnitus, fullness, and hearing loss in my Right ear, but no vertigo.... Those symptoms are annoying, but the vertigo is debilitating...
I'm here because the vertigo is back. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh.
I'm looking for some ideas on figuring out what triggers the vertigo and how to mitigate.
I noticed this time around that my neck and shoulders are very tense.
A dental x-ray from a week ago showed that my sinuses are full, even though I haven't been sick. I'm always clearing my throat and have an ongoing cough, even when I feel great, so I'm not completely surprised. I've been to many doctors about it, with lots of negative chest x-rays, etc. The Dentist suggested I go back to the ENT with the x-ray to see if there is a sinus drainage issue. I wonder if this could be linked to the ear issues.
Finally, I should mention that I also get migraines sometimes, mostly I think from MSG intake, but it's a delayed response, so it's hard to know for sure. The vertigo feels to me like it could be in the migraine family.... Just without the headache....
Sorry for blathering on. I'm just desperate to hear from others who know what this is. I'm going to see my chiropractor as soon as his office is open after the holidays - hope he can adjust my Atlas. maybe that will help. Haven't seen him in a couple of years either...

Hi, Shannon. Welcome to the forum. I am so sorry you are dealing with Meniere's.

There are several theories on what causes Meniere's. I will attempt to list them below. Note, I do not believe anyone is saying there is a single cause for all cases. Also, some of these might be correlations rather than causes. Forgive me if you already know some of this, I am just trying to be thorough.
    • viral
      • Forum member John of Ohio ("JOH") has a paper discussing his theories and a regimen of OTC supplements to treat. Lots of people have reported success using his regimen. I believe the latest version of his paper is from January 2023, posted here: The John of Ohio Regimen --- Updated
      • Ray (one of the founders of this website!) has successfully used high does of vitamin C as an antiviral: My Mega-Vitamin C Experiment as an Anti-Viral
      • Several forum members have taken prescription antivirals and have had improvement.
      • I have also seen some positive posts about monolaurin, oregano oil, and olive leaf extract supplements. Here is a JOH post on the last: Olive Leaf Extract Report --- A Success
    • gluten sensitivity / leaky gut / autoimmune. here, a nutritionist correlates gluten sensitivity, leaky gut, and autoimmune diseases with Meniere's: Laura Fisher Nutrition. included here is her attribution of some vitamin deficiencies to gluten sensitivity / leaky gut, saying they can exacerbate Meniere's symptoms. Interestingly, in this post, forum member Bennyhill says supplementing B5 and B6 helped him: My B5+B6 Log
    • structural - e.g., Atlas bone out of alignment. Sounds like you are already aware of this one. This post by Hank Sullivan (stored in the website database) might be helpful: Successful treatment from upper cervical adjustments Upper cervical seems to be a chiropractic specialty. I would be careful, I am not sure that all chiropractors are qualified to do upper cervical adjustments.
While i would not say salt, caffeine, or alcohol causes Meniere's, the consensus seems to be that too much any of them can aggravate it. There is a book I've read good things about called Heal Your Headache, you might check into it.

For me personally, eliminating wheat / gluten made the biggest difference; I stopped having vertigo episodes when I stopped eating it. Unfortunately, I still struggle with the other symptoms. I did try upper cervical chiropractic, but did not experience any improvement. I have been taking Ortho Molecular D-Hist daily, it seems to help some. I do take lysine (part of the JOH regimen), am thinking to do more of that regimen, as well as try monolaurin and olive leaf extract.

Good luck to you. Please post on what works and does not work for you.

Wow, thank you for this information! So good. Especially after all the doctors said to me was that it was untreatable...
I seem to be over the recent flare up. Fingers crossed. No vertigo for a week now. Hearing in my right ear is mostly back. I think the Chiropractor really helped, adjusted my atlas. Within a couple of days, I was better. I've also been taking Vit D, Cal-Mag, and zyrtec. I'm starting a multivitamin that has the B vitamins.
The vertigo is so awful, as I'm sure you all know. It brings my life to a halt. When I'm not spinning, I'm nauseous and I feel woozy and delicate, with a stiff neck and shoulders, and I have to make very careful movements...
    Thank you again.
    Shannon
